My Perspective On The Michael Daley Racism Controversy

This has been a tumultuous week in New South Wales Politics and the election results on March 23rd have reflected that. Now it’s time for me to jot down a few things.

I can honestly say it’s been incredible to see my video being seen, heard and reported on the ABC, SBS, 7, 9, 10, Sky News, Australian Associated Press, 2GB, News Corp, Fairfax as well as countless other outlets.

So, how did this all happen?

I filmed this story in September for my YouTube channel. I saw a ‘Politics In The Pub’ event that would be held in the Blue Mountains (where I live), promoting Member for Blue Mountains, Trish Doyle, with the then Deputy Opposition Leader, Michael Daley as a special guest.

I believe I’m the only Journalist who attended the event.

Mr Daley brought up the “Asian” topic by himself through housing affordability. I didn’t take any of his comments out of context; it wasn’t an inside job or a hatchet job and he was aware that i was filming as I was using my full TV camera gear, complete with tripod.

I wasn’t approached by any political or news organisation or individual prior to the story going viral on the night of March 18th, I became aware when my Twitter started to go a bit crazy. Additionally, I’m not a member of any political party or organisation and I enjoy good relations with the political parties and their representatives.

My video has been used recently by the New South Wales Business Chamber for one of their ads on taxes and I have no problem with that either.

A number of people have said to me that I decided the New South Wales State Election, that I’m a ‘Power Broker’ and Premier Gladys Berejiklian should take me out to dinner.

Understandably, I’m not exactly sure how to react to statements like that. I just did my job as a Journalist, I wasn’t paid for the video; I just did it for my YouTube channel. If any other politician had said those comments like Mr Daley’s I would have done the same thing.

Thank you to everyone who has spoken to me regarding my video. Now it’s time for me to look ahead. I don’t know where my career will take me, but I will certainly continue on my journey as a Journalist.
